In 2014 I started my first, Women’s ONLY Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Self-Defense course. I felt women would love jiu jitsu but needed an ice breaker to get past the initial discomfort of being in such close contact with another person. Jiu Jitsu offers women the best opportunity to train in a practical, useful art for REAL self defense. The focus tends to be on technique and not strength. Perfect! Except for one thing, if you aren’t really sure what jiu jitsu is, male to female contact can be a bit awkward.
At the time, my gym had just a few women, Myself, my training partner Emily who had earned a black belt in Karate as a youth before ever coming to us and ex Marine, triathlon, marathon, & motorcycle racing athlete Linda. BUT, I knew some of the men that trained had wives interested but still a bit intimidated by the idea. I occasionally ran into a woman that would do A class. But almost every time she didn’t want to return the reason was,
“Well, there are not any girls in the class.” And, “Well, I can’t work with you because you’re so much better than me that I’m actually holding you back and that makes me uncomfortable, too”
So, I decided it was time. I knew there was a need for it and I also wanted more women to train with! It was decided, lets get started together with the comfort of having a female instructor as well.
My first group consisted of mostly wives or daughters of male members. I was so nervous.
After the class, four enrolled in our integrated jiu jitsu program. One year later, four are still participating and two actively competing in jiu jitsu tournaments! They have children that participate as well. Not only did I gain new training partners, I gained new friends and something that was important to me, a few new Mommy friends!!
As this years Women’s ONLY Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Self-Defense course kicks off, we have 10 ladies in the class. I’m super excited to show them what learning jiu jitsu has to offer this year and each year I offer the program!
